Features & Benefits

For many outdoor building applications, ALTWOOD® is an ideal replacement for wood, pressure-treated wood, metal and concrete. Below are some of ALTWOOD®'s primary features and benefits:

A Non-Polluting Production Process

  • The 100% recycled raw materials consist of post consumer plastic waste and industrial plastic scrap that would have otherwise been buried in a local landfill.
  • The extrusion process uses NO EXTERNAL HEAT during production - which is the unique feature of our technology. Our extruders use extreme pressure to slowly mix and mold the recycled plastic into its final ALTWOOD® form. There are no fumes released during the process and the finished product is completely sterile, inert and non-toxic.
  • All water used in the cooling process for the extruders is completely recirculated.
  • All scrap materials are recycled again - so that there is absolutely no waste.

A Quality Finished Product

ALTWOOD®'s unique production process provides it with some qualities unique in the industry, including:

  • The proprietary extrusion process enables us to mix all types of thermoplastics at once. This creates a product that is stronger, less flexible, and more cost-effective. It also means that we don't have to introduce wood or wood by-products, fiberglass or special chemicals to strengthen our product. These materials only increase the cost of production and reduce the performance of the finished product.
  • The high pressure molds provide reliable dimensions and a smoother, more natural feeling finish.
  • The product is solid with a uniform density. It has a non-porous surface and its colour is permanent, consistent and mixed through the material. If desired, the product can als be surface painted (however, we recommend first using an interior/exterior alkyd primer, such as the "Fresh Start® QD-30®" product manufactured by Benjamin Moore Paints).

Other ALTWOOD® Benefits

  • Will not warp - even under direct sunlight or high ambient temperatures (the recommended range of temperatures for ALTWOOD® is -50°C to +80°C / -58°F to +176°F).
  • Will not rot, crack, split, splinter, erode or weather (it's UV protected).
  • Highly resistant to impact, shock, breakage and abrasion.
  • Resistant to attacks by animals, insects, fungi and bacteria.
  • Does not leach toxic chemicals into the soil and our water table like pressure-treated wood.
  • Impervious to moisture, salt water, oil, gasoline and most chemicals or solvents.
  • Electrically resistive - excellent for electric fence installations.
  • Machining properties are typical of thermoplastic articles and similar to hard wood.
  • Can be nailed, screwed, stapled, drilled, milled, sawed, planed and cut with conventional manual and electric wood working tools.
  • Requires no maintenance other than simply cleaning.
Using ALTWOOD® instead of pressure-treated lumber also helps to protect our environment!
