Common Questions / Product Characteristics

ALTWOOD(r) as a Deck Railing
Does ALTWOOD® chalk or fade over time?
No, ALTWOOD® won't chalk. With its soft, natural colours and quality UV protection, you can expect only very gentle fading over many years. ALTWOOD® is a blend of 100% thermoplastics, not a plastic/wood blend or PVC.

Does ALTWOOD® have that plastic "fake" look that I see with some competitive products?

No. ALTWOOD® comes in three natural colours and it has a wood like grain without shine. Most people can't tell it apart from natural wood!

Does ALTWOOD® get too hot on the feet in the sun?

The temperature of the surface is mostly determined by the colour of your surface, not the material. Your ALTWOOD® deck will feel the same as wood of a similar colour.

Is ALTWOOD® safe? I have young children and pets.

Yes. ALTWOOD® will not splinter or cup, doesn't leach dangerous chemicals, is safe to work on with bare hands, and is great for picnic table surfaces and children's play sets. Remember, when kept free of mud and leaves, ALTWOOD® is also slip resistant when wet and no moss will grow!

Can I use ALTWOOD® for organic growing of vegetables and flowers?

Yes. ALTWOOD® will not harbor bacteria or fungus and it doesn't leach any poisons or chemicals like pressure treated wood.

Does ALTWOOD® float?

Yes. The density of ALTWOOD® is 0.88 (water is 1.0). ALTWOOD® will float just below the surface and will stay that way. Because it is 100% synthetic without wood fiber, it will not absorb moisture over time. ALTWOOD® is an excellent material for docks, bridge surfaces, boardwalks, etc. See Working with Altwood or Technical Specifications for more information.

Can I use ALTWOOD® to surround my hot tub, swimming pool or fishpond?

Of course! This is an ideal application for the product. ALTWOOD® is slip resistant when wet, will not rot or give splinters, can be hosed off with water, and is resistant to most chemicals. It also won't leach harmful poisons that hurt your fish as pressure-treated wood will. And it looks completely natural!
